Detail:

This course is essential learning for all Hampshire professionals working with children and young people and will help employees and volunteers to understand how disabilities can impact children's lives, families and their care.  This could include, but is not limited to, police and criminal justice services, educators, child minders, health and social care staff and sports and youth club members. This course will develop practitioner understanding and explore why children with disabilities are more vulnerable to neglect and abuse.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore the current legislation, guidance and context relating to children with a disability including Hampshire's policies and procedures.
  • Understand the particular circumstances which make disabled children more vulnerable to abuse
  • Understand/recognise the signs presented by disabled children who may have been subjected to abuse,  including any potential for confusion in interpretation
  • Understand the factors which may influence when disabled children need help and protection
  • Ensure that interventions remain focused on the best interests of the child whilst working in complex situations
