Detail:

This interactive workshop is for Hampshire multi-agency professionals who work directly with parents / carers to affect positive change.  The course will provide you with the tools, skills and confidence to identify harmful parental conflict, and support parents / carers to understand the impact their conflict has on their children and develop more helpful conflict behaviours.  This course may also be of interest to professionals working with families who aspire to deliver direct work with parents / carers in the future.

Delivered by Relate, this full-day workshop (from 09:30am to 16:30pm) will enhance practitioners’ skills, knowledge, and confidence in developing professional practice when managing parental conflict. Practitioners will develop confidence in the implementation of a framework and models to support them in providing a proportionate response when there is conflict between parents.

By attending this workshop, you will:

  • Be able to distinguish between parental conflict and domestic abuse including coercive control
  • Explore and reflect on your own internal biases and/or personal experiences, and how these may impact you in responding to conflict indicators for the families you’re working with.
  • Develop understanding of the impact of parental conflict on children, how it can cause trauma for children/young people and what support might be needed with that
  • Confidently and compassionately be able to explain to parents how unhealthy conflict can have a negative impact on family life and on the children and manage this confidentially for parents living together
  • Recognise and be able to deliver a different approach when working with separated parents, including legal implications of parental responsibility and ability to work together to address conflict.
  • Further develop skills and confidence in initiating restorative, strength-based conversations.
  • Gain awareness and signposting to other services including use of the Strengthening Parental Relationships toolkit for Practitioners, Parents and Carers and the online evidence-based courses for parents
  • Understand how to access further support and training to use the digital interventions
  • Use scenario-based case studies to enhance learning and address scenarios of conflict within diverse families (including same sex parents, parents with ESOL, military parents and adoptive parents), reflecting on what you have learned about local and national mechanisms of the approach and support available.
