This training is an introduction to  Domestic Abuse and how it may present within LGBTQ+ relationships including familial elements. It will cover the dynamics of an abusive relationship as they relate to LGBTQ+ individuals. Covering key domestic abuse behaviours used against LGBTQ+ people and specific barriers faced by this group, the training will support delegates to recognise unconscious biases and how to best support a friend, peer, colleague, staff or family member who may be LGBTQ+ and experiencing domestic abuse, safely and inclusively.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Understand the dynamics of an abusive relationship as it relates to LGBTQ+ couples and identify LGBTQ+ specific tactics of power and control.
  • Navigate language and definitions relating to LGBTQ+ identities and understand the historical and national legislation that has and continues to influence LGBTQ+ people’s lives.
  • Understand the key issues in LGBTQ+ relationships, recognise the barriers and challenges that the LGBTQ+ people experience within society.
  • Improve confidence for professionals in responding to and discussing domestic abuse within LGBTQ+ relationships.
  • To recognise and reframe how your work might intersect with LGBTQ+ survivor experiences.
  • Develop the skills to offer initial support to victims/ survivors and confidently refer them to appropriate local domestic abuse services using established referral pathways.
